chaos magick internet radio broadcast

2009-

chaos magick is a weekly internet radio show co-hosted by selden paterson and tola brennan. the show is an experiment in improvised radio, and the two hosts generate the playlist, call and response style, based on each other’s song choices. the trajectory of the show aspires to reach a certain fluid nature in which each song naturally and sequentially flows into the next. the normal fare of the show seems to gravitate towards recent indie rock with healthy doses of folk and quite arbitrary and whimsical-idiosyncratic bands.

the show is: tuesdays, 4:30-5:30 CST

the mighty handful

2007-2009

the mighty handful was a raucous brooklyn-based rock group characterized by chaos and spontaneity. the line up began as henry crawford (guitar & vocals), jack lesser (guitar & vocals), tola brennan (bass), felix walworth (drums) and jack greenleaf (keyboards and random percussive instruments). the mighty handful included aviva skye (violin) for a significant period of time, who was eventually replaced by jesse goldberg (trumpet) and clare ardito (trombone). the band played frequently around the new york area at such venues as webster hall, death by audio, southpaw and the cakeshop. despite extensive photo documentation (primarily by the excellent richard gin), the band has no legitimate recordings, which does much to sum up the overall aesthetic of the group. the mighty handful played loud, broke stuff, put on unavoidably exciting performance, and then disappeared completely.

the comfort

2008-2009

the comfort was a new york indie trio consisting of tola brennan (band leader, singer, songwriter), aya yamamoto (violin) and charlie dore-young (guitar). the group was primarily inspired by the brooklyn-based band the national, as well as old furniture (especially couches and lamps), origami, angst, loneliness and poloroid photographs. the songs were lyrically introspective and consistently arranged as a series of slow and detailed build-ups eventually climaxing and then returning to quietude. the music was focused primarily on ambience (or more accurately tone) as opposed to discrete melodic sections. the envisioned result was to produce a feeling of tranquility and contentment in the audience, while still retaining the intensity requisite for a successful life performance. though obviously, and hopefully beautifully, the comfort was, most importantly, about comfort and anything associated with it.

tronic

2008-2009

tronic was a short lived electronic duo producing rather chipper electronic music through explorations with the popular sequencing platform reason. the group consisted of tola brennan (reason) and oliver kalb (creative input). a few live exposes were attempted. however, they met severe difficulties and tronic was doomed to be set aside in lieu of other more feasible projects.
