this is an essay addressing the rather short chapter in Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov called The Grand Inquisitor in which Jesus returns to the world in Spain during the inquisition and is imprisoned and questioned by the papal authorities. it is an often referenced passage and comes rather arbitrarily in the overall narrative of the hefty and complex novel.
